Default 1914 EK 1 in wear during TR period

Below is a photo of my first Iron Cross, one that I picked up at my first military show. The ribbon bar came with the Stammabteilung tunic and I thought this would be a nice addition to dress it up. It is a solid silver, one-piece construction example having a mass of 23.1 grams and measuring 42 mm. There are no markings present on the reverse.

It's a good piece to add to the tunic. I guess the tunic had loops on it for an EK1?

Yes, the tunic has two sets of loops. The former owner of this tunic had an EK1 and a nice cutout wound badge affixed. I do like the EK very much and the wound badge, though not quite as nice an example as the one formerly in it's place, has a decent look to it. Thanks for looking.

What happened to the original EK1?

Oh, I don't know if it was even original to the tunic. Bob Coleman had one on there when the tunic was in his collection along with the wound badge. It was without any awards when it came into my possession and I just liked how he had it displayed. The ribbon bar is as it was while in the Coleman collection.

Oh, that explains it, I was thinking the original cross to the tunic had been removed.

I imagine the original awards are often removed and scattered, probably starting at the very end of the war. Even in the short time I've been collecting I have observed tunics in collections with a number of badges and then see these same tunics surface elsewhere without any awards on them. I guess it's just the way it is, easier to sell the individual items because they weren't originally with the tunic anyhow.

    Best,

Good call Greg, I had no idea about a "pumpkin crown" fake. Thank you. I did my best to research this out but I guess I should have known better. The show had mainly reproductions but I thought maybe this was a good item. I got what I deserved.

    Kind regards,
