Bronk, one thing that might happen over the years, is that vets may pick up other items post war, and they might end up to be fake. This looks to be a very nice piece

Looks a beauty to me,the fakes often have a "ridge"around the inner edges and this one does not. Simply put it looks as good as you will ever find. Leon.

to rbemer 207----yes, I thought of that, and wanted some experts to check everything out...with the pistol I have which I believe could not at all have been fake, I tried to think of a reason why my uncle could NOT have picked these up in 45..the war had ended, then the infantry would not have a problem humping around extra goods...thanks for any replies from everyone, always good to thin of every angle

There are many reasons why fakes end up in collections belonging to veterans no matter how much people want to believe in them.

This is why items should stand on their own merit and be judged for what they are.
Evaluate the item and not the story that comes with it.

Looks like time has just froze with this item, it looks the same as it did 70-80 years ago.

Personally, I like this set. It looks to be unissued with full frosting still present-possibly a Mayer?
IF these are not fakes, I'm super disappointed I didn't get to talk with my uncle---what I really would like to ask everyone, what is their opinion on where he would've found these?? you say unissued...<>picked it up at a manufacturer/or an HQ where they were stored/etc???
