The "metal glue" would have probably been a type of solder ( soft / lead / silver ) or zamak ( kirksite ) wet painted onto the surfaces to be joined.
Zamak is a zinc based casting alloy for prototypes with a very low melt temp that can actually be painted to a surface - a good way to assemble metals without glue.
