Painted at the end of the manufacturing process hence the loss of paint on the core.

Hi Nick,
Nice cross. Do you think the swaz and, possibly, dates were deliberately polished by the recipient to make them 'pop' as I have seen this on other awards? Or is it just a part of the natural wear due to the paint process you described?

Could be either Ned, but I would say its natural wear as the paint comes off easliy on one piece crosses

Nice and uncommon cross Nick. Might be worth pointing out the maker is only thought to be Schickle, I'm not aware there is any hard and fast proof this maker made these crosses. Here's mine for comparison.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

Yes I know it only thought to be made by Schickle, I wonder if we will ever know for sure

A nice example, Nick.
If I remember right, there are a thick and a thin of these variants.
I will post my 2 examples later to compare with yours.
