There were alot, that is without doubt!
To quote Gordon Williamson in his book 'The Iron Cross of 1939'

"There are no confirmed figures for the total number of awards of the Iron Cross Second Class made between 1939 and 1945. Figures have been quoted by various sources ranging from 2,300,000 and 5,500,000. The true figure will probably never be know but is likely to be towards the lower end of the range."

    And

"Somewhere in the region of 750,000 awards of the Iron Cross First Class are believed to have been made."

I guess we will never know!

Nice info. Very varied accounts then. As a follow up, are there any somewhat reliable estimates as to how many War Merit Crosses were made, with and without swords? I assume quite a bit more than the millions of EK2s... I know the War Merit Medal was introduced because TOO many were being awarded and they go for quite a bit cheaper than an EK2 on the market.

From Gordon Williamson again, from his book 'The War Merit Cross':

"Around 6,134,950 War Merit Crosses Second Class with Swords and 1,591,567 without Swords were awarded."

    Again.....

"Around 483,603 War Merit Crosses First Class with Swords and 91,239 without Swords were awarded, making it far less common than its Second Class counterpart."

Quite specific numbers compared to the EK figures!
