As an owner of a EK2 (marked 65) with ribbon, I would like to ask just how the medals were held up when worn. Was a pin or safetypin used, or tied or just stuffed into the botton hole and held by friction.

Both! Usually it was stuffed into the buttonhole but if you look at my last post above with the photo of the U-Boat crew being awarded the EK2 you can clearly see the awards being attached by a safety pin. There are also photos of Kriegsmarine personnel having the ribbon tied to their 'Donald Duck' uniforms.
After the award ceremony the medal itself was seldom worn except for photos or on formal occasions. A length of ribbon was sewn through the button hole to denote the award and the medal was either sent home, kept in the pocket etc or it was court mounted to be worn on special occasions.

just one more silly question on the wear of the ek2, i see in one pic it is attached jst above the pocket was it just down to different units sop's? also in the film the bunker one of the characters uses an ek2 to represent an ek1 did this happen until the soldier recieved his first class?

Yes indeed Rory, they were fashioned from an EK2 in the field in lieu of receiving their original.These 'EK2' EK1s are quite collectable !!
