This is an interesting cross. A forgery but certainly interesting.
    Further to the observations above.
Looking closely at the frame although both the obverse and reverse dies show some similarities there are I believe some marked differences, indicating to ME that there are two dies in use.
I wonder where this one originates it is not a quality fake I am familiar with.
I have changed the pictures to make them more acceptable.
Where are you seeing the differences in the frames Doug? I'm seeing more similarities than anything.

comments on what is going on with the beading here on the obverse?

for this, I am in agreement with Paul E that some sharper images would certainly be nice.

at the inner juncture between the 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock arms?

i'm just trying to ferret out what he is seeing.

i see a difference in the defect i have shown and one at the juncture of 12 and 3 arms? do you see that, Adrian or am i just nuts? because i'm open minded to the fact i could be.

I will suggest some features on the cross that are identical front and back. It should be easy to follow, match the coloured circles to their opposite counterpart.

I will add a couple of points to note too:

In the green circle, the gap between the first and second full beads in wider than the others. The same on both frames.

In the blue circle there is a horizontal flaw on the U shaped corner beading join, the same front and back.

In the red circle the first complete bead is thinner than the others, again, the same on both sides.

In the white circle, note the elongated diamond shaped corner bead. There is an indentation on the same bead on both sides.

The similarities for me offer evidence that the frames on both sides were made in the same die.

Funny you should say that Danny, I thought I saw the ghost of where a suspension ring was once attached on the obverse frame but thought I was seeing a trick of the light and patina. While I was adding circles it was crossing my mind about it being remarkably similar to a S&L frame.
