Anti-tank weapon, ammo found in Berlin forest

BERLIN (AP) - Berlin police say a cache of WWII-era munitions has been found in a western part of the city, which had been the scene of particularly fierce fighting between the Soviet Red Army and the Nazi defenders in 1945.

Police said Wednesday that a person taking a walk through a forested area in Spandau came across the cache the day before.

It included armor-piercing anti-tank rounds, about 20 kilograms (50 pounds) of small-arms ammunition and a panzerfaust - a single shot anti-tank weapon often put in the hands of teenagers hastily mustered at the war's end in a futile attempt to defend the Nazi capital.

Police say they believe more munitions may still be buried in the area and have cordoned off part of the forest as they investigate.

Hard to believe that there would be much left on the surface to stumble across at this late date.

There must still be a damn sight more scattered around Berlin, i was talking to a guy working on the extension of the U8 ubahn line and he reckoned they are digging small arms ammo up every day. Thanks for sharing William!..

Amazing what they still find.

I guess, that German EOD is by now so experienced, that they take it all in their stride unless for the biggest types of ordnance, which should be able to get even their pulse up.
