BOER WAR memorial nuneaton

Not really sure where in the forum to put this, but I recently was asked to do a little research into a local gentleman's relation who was KIA in the 2nd Boer War.

As part of the research I went an took a couple of pictures of the Nuneaton War memorial.

I personally think it is a very nice memorial, tastefully done.
It features the names of all the men who fought, not just those who didnt come back.

The original 1½ tonne statue was stolen from its plinth in 2006. It had been a familiar figure in Nuneaton for 101 years.
The current "replica" of the original, was made possible after a £50,000 fund raising appeal was completed to finance the replacement.

I thought Id post it on here and list the names in case anyone is interested and stumbles across this thread in the future. ive marked the died on active with red

I assume the thieves were after the bronze metal scrap value but how did they get away without someone noticing it being stolen?

Here in the UK there was a quite a spate of memorial plaque thefts, scumbags after a few quid's worth of bronze.

In 2006 the metal commodities market was going through the roof, criminals all over the world took notice and all manner of metal including manhole covers were stolen. The metals markets have dropped somewhat but these bronze inscriptions, not to mention statute will always be a tempting target for the sticky fingered philistines. Those who care about history in their area should photograph the monuments while they are there, in case they need to be reproduced in the future.
