A rare chance to excavate two slots across the WWII stopline in Carmarthenshire.

One slot was hand dug to the maximum safe working depth of 1.2 m. This gave us its width of 5.5 m, but not the depth or its profile, so a second slot was dug using a tracked digger to take it down to full depth of 2.65 m.

The period photo shows what it would have looked like and the drawn profile mentions the brushwood revetment of which traces were found in the second slot.

The 2nd slot was far too dangerous to climb into and it was only photographed from on top and it quite rapidly started to collapse.

I bet it felt good to be paid to dig a WW2 site. Nice one.

    Cheers, Ade.

It did indeed Ade, a rare thing to get the chance to do. A shame that there were no finds but that was to be expected, only open for a few years and then backfilled.

    Still cool to see it.

More to slow them down, early war panzers would have struggled to cross it, though easy to fill it with a few tanks then drive over the top of them, or fill it with fascines, use bridging equipment or blow the sides in etc.

Perhaps more for public morale than a serious attempt to stop the Germans if they had ever invaded, but as they did not...
