    Hello Richie,

I just got back from Balaclava. I could see the bunkers emplacments down around the water area. I never made it high up on the hill tops. Awesome place. I will post my recent pictures on the forum.

    Take Care,

The emplacements you see at sea level in the harbor are posted here:

Excellent location for defending the harbor. too bad you did'nt make it over to the hills on ether side of the harbor entrance, looks like some more structures on them in the distance.

    Hi Neil-

Most of the buildings you see on the hills are either modern day private homes and dachas, 50X-80X Soviet Army observation/weather stations, or ruins of 14th century Genoese fortresses and clearings.

It is a pity that I did not take many photos of such places during my last travels through these places - I suppose I was too gung-ho to get inside that sub-base in the harbor...

Here are a few images showing the surrounding area and one of the more popular (in postcards and tourist brochures) Genoese fortresses (in a state of kind & gentle restoration BTW) that we passed by on the way down to the harbor, towards the above mentioned destination.
