As some of you will be aware I have recently returned from a trip to the battlefields of Russia where I was accompanied by Historian and Author (War without garlands - Operation Barbarossa) Bob Kershaw. In this thread I will be following the route taken by the Das Reich division along the Minsk road from the penultimate Moscow defence line (Mozhaisk line) situated at the Napoleonic and WW2 battlefield at Borodino to the two locations nearest Moscow reached by a; A large military force and b; a small recce unit.
1; The Borodino monument surrounded by defences from both 1812 and 1941.
A Soviet Anti tank bunker overlooking the bridge leading from Borodino towards Moscow
Following the line of advance a small vehicle park near Istra the scene of heavy fighting by Das Reich .
The bridgehead on the East bank of the Moscow-Volga Canal at Yakrohmato taken by elements of 7th Panzer Division.
Looking west from the high point occupied by the Germans over the Moscow-Volga canal.
12 km from the Kremlin. The nearest German forces managed to advance. A small recce patrol from 2 Panzer div reached the suburbs in December.
Finally some friendly locals and general scenes.
