When I studied abroad in Berlin... one thing that struck me along with the battle damage on nearly every building old enough to be around in WWII was the amount of construction taking place. We'd walk past a construction site, and wherever they were digging we'd just see huge layers of rubble. Seems as if the modern parts of the city are just built ontop of the ruins caused by bombing and the Battle of Berlin.
