Indeed they are Dave. What I will always remember, is that the image in the snow was taken during a harsh winter's day several years ago. It was -20c, yet somebody had visited the site to leave their own personal tribute to the countless victims who died at this, the blackest of locales. It was very touching.

Several images of some of the memorials at Gedenkstätte-Flossenbürg. The site, despite being the fourth largest Konzentrationslager in Germany, was known as "the forgotten camp", for many years. Significant improvements were eventually made during the late 1990's, with some of the original structures being uncovered amidst the many various industrial buildings that had been erected on the former camp grounds over the years. As the modern images show, the staff at Flossenbürg maintain a beautiful commemorative site.

The first image shows a commemorative stone that stands on the site of the former prisoner's block, Block 18. The next image shows the "Valley of Death" area, comprising the "Square of Nations" memorial section, which commemorates the 18 different nationalities who suffered at the locale, the "Pyramid of Ashes" and the "Red Triangle" execution area memorial. To the rear, the Krematoria, ramp, Jewish commemorative stone, original gateposts that were moved to this location many years ago and one of the three remaining original watchtowers can all be seen. Finally, a closer view of the "Red Triangle" execution area and an image of the Jewish commemorative building are shown. Another of the original watchtowers is visible in the background, a stark reminder of the site's former purpose.

    Regards,

    Carl

Further images of the Flossenbürg site...

First, a view across the memorial park area, site of the former isolation blocks, towards the "Jesus in the Dungeon" chapel. The chapel was constructed using stone from some of the original watchtowers, one of which can still be seen next to the chapel. Secondly, the commemorative plaque that marks the location where seven members of the anti-Hitler coalition, including Admiral Wilhelm Canaris were hanged in April 1945.
