Default 70th Anniversary of Heydrich's assassination

Today, May27th, marks the 70th anniversary of the assassination of SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich. The story is very well known, as are the terrible events of the aftermath.

Later, I shall be visiting an exhibition in the centre of Prague, and shall post some images for you all. For now, a few images of the site of the assassination, and the memorial to the parachutists that stands there today, as well as the memorial at the church were they died, following the massive manhunt with came after Heydrich's death.

    Regards,

    Carl

The first of two exhibitions in the centre that I visited yesterday, was this reproduction of Heydrich's Mercedes cabriolet.

The second of the exhibits that opened in Prague last weekend, the 70th anniversary of the assassination of SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich, is this reconstruction of a concentration camp, that has been erected in the centre of one of Prague's main squares (Karlovo Nįměstķ / Charles Square). The site is but a stone's throw away from the crypt, underneath the church where Heydrich's assassins were eventually cornered by hundreds of SS troops. Within the exhibition, which runs for another two weeks, are a 70 part recollection of life and events at the time, told by those who were there.

    Regards,

    Carl

Really interesting Carl, thanks for sharing the pics! It was a brave act to assassinate that bastard but the whole country paid a high price for it.

You're welcome Dave, glad that you find it interesting. We could talk all night long, and often do :-) but we would never be able to guess what would have happened had Heydrich been left alive to reign over the Protektorat. I often speak with folk here, and they are still split over the whole assassination issue. Whilst most are in agreement, some believe that "one man versus what happened to Lidice and Le˛aky" simply wasn't worth it. Had he lived though, the mind boggles at what may have happened.

    Regards,

    Carl

Very true, Carl, Heydrich was certainly intelligent and ambitious, a combination of those traits together with a complete lack of empathy for anyone made him extremely dangerous and unpredictable. We can only speculate as to how far up the chain of command he would have eventually risen had he not been stopped by the brave actions of his assassins.
