An American 'blood chit' card for Russia. Slightly bigger than a credit card its use is exactly the same as the silk/fabric blood chits. I believe that these were issued mainly for bomber crews who faced the possibility of landing in Russia (or Russian occupied countries towards the end of the war) if their aeroplane was damaged over Germany and they were unable to return home. Also issued for aircrew involved in Operation FRANTIC

Far Eastern Survival Land & Sea - This is the 'silk' version (actually printed on Rayon), printed on fabric so that it could still be used when wet. Bought for £3.70!

A cloth survival chart for the navigation of rubber rafts. Printed on Rayon and for the South East Asia Theatre of war it details how to sail and navigate a life raft should you be unlucky enough to ditch into the ocean (there is a lot ocean over there!). It is shown with AAF Eastern Asia series map showing Nemuro.

1943 Pattern Escape boots - Escape boots were designed so that the upper suede part of the boot could be cut off leaving a pair of shoes (which were obviously a lot less suspicious when you were on the run). The right hand boot had a small pocket which held a concealed knife to remove the upper part of the boot. This, as with most boots, is missing from my two pairs of boots. Some of the escape boots also had laces which had magnatised metal ends which could be used as a compass and also sometimes the laces themselves had a thin wire concealed in them for use as a saw. Other boots had items such as compasses and maps hidden in the soles. (Unfortunatly I wasn't so lucky with the pair I bought and there was nothing hidden in them or the laces!). There is a myth that the upper parts could be put together to make a waist coat. There is no way of joining the upper parts (other than obviously sewing) and the two pieces are not large enough to cover the upper torso of a man

Shown is a page from Per Ardua Libertas - the boots shown are the rarer early type which has leather uppers instead of suede.

An interesting pack of wartime cards picked up at a car boot sale. I had them for a while before I found their little secret! Five of the cards have holes cut in them. The 'hole' they create is not very deep so I don't know what was meant to be hidden in there, although it is about passport photo sized. A tissue map would fit in (I did fold it up but it wouldn't stay flat to be photographed). Interestingly it is only the Aces and Joker (the other Joker is missing) that have been cut - maybe so that card games could still be played with them?
Of course I could be totally wrong and it could be some school boys magic trick (any magicians out there?)

Part of any good escape kit was money, shown below is an example of some of currency issued (although a couple of the notes are occupation money). Some escape kits, especially American, had pieces of gold or gold coins in them. Funnily enough these are quite rare!

An American carrier pigeon leg capsule which would have been attached to the pigeons' leg. I have two, one appears unissued, however, given the condition of the other one it may have been used. It has the remains of red paint on the bottom part of the capsule and contained within it is an unused message!

A rare alloy hilted fighting knife which came with an equally rare cotton/linen version Zones of France map. It is shown alongside a 3rd Pattern FS knife (which belonged to a para who fought at Arnhem) for comparison.

Zones Of France - The one issued to paratroopers. I have two, one made of silk the other feels like a very fine cotton or linen. They show an identical printed map (see the block of lines above the 'Ligurian Sea'), however the cotton / linen map is marked '139 (WEA) MAR 44' and the silk one '1.S.9 (WEA) MAR 44'.
The silk map also shows a printing error where it has been creased when printed (see the areas of white in the Ligurian Sea).
