Default WW2 Para Beret? Can anyone identify?

At a local sale last week found this cap listed as a maroon beret thought it looked an interesting item so purchased, can anybody help me identify if it is an original and could it be WW2? And an idea of value would be really helpful - inside is a makers mark of Moss Bros and Co of Covent Gardens and has the name Chadwick written inside - any help would be greatly appreciated - Samantha

    Moss Bros. private purchase....usually officer.

    Nice looking wartime badge.

Has the beret been pressed....by some over-zealous Rupert?

Let's see what Ade has to say....

    Cheers,

    Pat

Hi Samantha, not good news on this one, sorry. For starters the cap badge is a well known fake. Note the "blob" die flaw under the top left wing.

The beret itself is certainly post war and I think the Moss Bros label is an addition. I don't like the placement of it.

    Cheers, Ade.

Hi Matt, you are OK paying a fiver for it.

Early postwar 1950's berets are virtually the same as wartime. Later ones from the 1980's etc have fabric not leather edged sweatbands.

This might not even be British issue. Many many countries have copied the Red Beret.

    Cheers, Ade.
