1908 aero safety mirror

This old mirror was found in Albert Packers trunk
Mr Packer was in the AFC, No. 4 Squadron
Would like to know more about this mirror as it is dated 1908.
Would it have been used in WW1?
When were they first used and why?
How long were they in service?
Any information would be great.

An most interesting piece and one that I'm not familiar with.

I may however suggest that it could be used for signalling purposes?

Hello Allegra, I do concur, but to be so well made, and to have lasted 105 years. It must have been at the top of their safety list

Steve - I would have perhaps said that - but as there is no stand nor hook - hence my statement. I also came across a piece that talked about balloonists signalling via mirrors.

Having said that, it may be used if the pilot went down?

Tobruk - many thanks - where are you? I'm in Belair. And BTW - it is patented in 1908 - doesn't have to be made then...just an observation.

15cm? I'm assuming it would not be used for signalling then. I should have asked the diameter before wading in.

Steve could well be correct, though I still would have thought it would have had a hook or a stand.
