Well at the start of WW2 Germany had the most modern airforce. they were not the larges, the french and British airforce were wiped of the map in 1940 (the UK making a return to air power in 1940). All up the Luftwaffe dominated for the first half of the war, but then there small bombers, could not compete with the Lancaster of flying fortress, the fighter ME-109 was a brilliant aircart a match for all until 194-45 when the Americans created the P-51. The German Jets did not play a large enough roll. to little numbers and to many Allies. I would say 50/50 with Germany and the US.

Definitely the RAF IMO. Aside from my slightly bias viewpoint as a Brit, I think the Battle of Britain was as pivotal a point in the war as Stalingrad and Normandy. The odds faced by the RAF is enough for them to win the title IMO

    Tally ho chaps, what what.

What about the Soviets? I thought they had a large airforce as well, though maybe not much early war, but a force to be reckoned with by the late war period.

    The RAF was the best.

The Me 109 had become outdated before 44 and had been supersceded by the FW190. I thought the p51 was designed to British specifications and the engine was based on the rolls royce merlin and if I am not mistaken the first ME 109 to fly had a rolls royce engine in it?

I thought the same, if we were wiped off the map in 1940, ERR who won the Battle of Britain ???

I would nominate the Finnish air force-pound for pound the most effective, despite being equipped with mediocre aircraft at best they managed to hold off and gain a measure of air superiority over the vastly larger Soviet forces.

Dowding refused to send more squadrons to what he considered a lost cause.
