    Hi everyone, The Duxford 109 has an interesting history which I would like to share with you. Messerschmitt Bf 109 E4 Werknummer1190 was manufactured in Leipzig on september18 1939 as an E4, meaning it had Daimler-Benz 601A engine, this was later upgraded to a more powerful DB601/N, upgrading the aircraft to a Bf109 E4/N. The gothic 'S' on the fuselage shows it was on strength with the famous 'Abbeville Kids', Jagdgeshwader (JG) 26.The aircraft was originally the personal mount of acting Gruppen Kommandeur Karl Ebbighausen,who scored 5 victories in it, they can still be seen on the tail,2 Dutch, 1 French and 2 British.Ebbighausen was shot down and killed on 16th August1940 in another aircaft,he was replaced 11 days later, as C.O by the legendary Adolph Galland.On the 30thSeptember 1940 Bf 109 E4/N Wn1190 'White 4' took off from Marquise-Est as a bomber escort. It was being piloted byUnter Offizer Horst Perez, a fairly inexperienced combatant.At some point over Beachy Head, Perez was engaged by Sgt Donald Kingaby(later a famous ace who survived the war)in a 92 Sqn Spitfire.’ White 4's' engine seized and Perez belly landed his plane in a field at East Dean near Eastbourne.He surrendered to P.C. Walter Hyde and members of the local Home Guard,who, being a little over enthusiastic,managed to shoot him in the hand and jaw!He was later sent to a POW camp in Canada.The intact airframe of 'White 4' later toured the U.S and Canada on a war bonds drive.It eventually ended up in a canadian scrapyard, from where it was rescued in the late 60's.Returned to the U.K,it lay in storage for many years due to protracted legal wranglings over it's ownership.Finally,it was acquired for the Royal Air Force museum and one side was restored, the other left in as found condition.     Hi Ned, you are correct about it's history. One of the things I really like about the exhibit is the graffiti of peoples names scratched on the wing. It is covered in names.
