I'd have to say the FW190 takes the cake. Such elegant, yet aggresive lines to it.

    I think he's a lil outnumbered here!

Well I have to say I would agree that you are all forgetting ONE vital aircraft, without which we could NOT have done without......

....Fighter, night fighter, medium bomber, photo recon, pathfinder, bomb area marker, destroyer of countless buildings in the middle of cities without TOUCHING anything else, anti-shipping (57mm cannon) and so much more.....

AND built out of WOOD !

    ....I give you....

    The De Havilland Mosquito

This one gets my vote for best looking piston engine fighter of WW2. And it was no slouch in battle either.
Here here! Yes the P-51 Mustang was unique by the way it could escort the bombers all the way into Germany and then take on the very best of the Lufwaffe fighters and come out on top. We went to an airshow a couple of years back, now there was a Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane and P51-Mustang doing flying displays. I have to say the Mustang stole the show with its sheer grace, manouverability and high pitched howls as it dived, its a stunning aeroplane. The Spitfire and Hurricane were good at what they were designed to do-point defence of our island. The Mustang was designed to fly to Germany and back and kick butts excuse the expression. I think we all have our favourites and on the German side i have to say the FW190 takes some beating. Regards, Tim.

I still think the A6M2 Zero was a marvelous plane, very light, fast, agile and quite beautiful to look at, nice lines. The downside of course was the lack of any armor and failry weak armament.

Another fav of mine is the Hurricane Mk I. Beautiful, not just the look of the plane but also the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin Mk II engine it was the Hurricane that fought and won the most battles in france and in the battle of Britain and ive read many accounts of pilots refusing to take on the new spitfire. Many pilots including Douglas Bader thought it was superior to the Spit but in the end it was both that really saved Britain.

    Cheers-Darren

Never used to give the P-51 much thought until i saw one at airshow and it was simply the most stunning display of power and elegance i have ever seen. The Spit and Hurri's just didnt seem to make the hair on the back of the neck stand on end like the P-51. The P-51 is widely recognised as one of the most important factors in defeating Nazi Germany in WW2. When we talk of the Spitfire and Hurricane winning the Battle of Britain we must also remember that the RAF were just two weeks away from total defeat when Hitler gave the order to stop attacking the RAF airfields and bomb London instead, so the Luftwaffe were winning the air war and only lost because of Hitlers interference, something which continually incensed both the German Army High Command and the Luftwaffe. His biggest mistake was perhaps hindering the progress of the ME262. Imagine had that first operational jet fighter entered service in significant numbers say in 1943. Scary to think that the outcome would have almost certainly been in Germanys favour. The Japanese built some beautiful fighter aircraft especially late in the war, and its difficult to pick a favourite of all as there were so many outstanding ones. We all have our favourites though and i have to say when i have played the computer game Fighter Squadron which is a real blast i have claimed all of my 301 kills in an FW190! Tried the P-51 but its six machine guns seem to take ages to down bombers. Regards, Tim.

That bit about the Me262 is an old myth- development was difficult and slow and the bird couldn't have been ready any sooner than it was; the 'interference' only affected the numbers active as fighters, once they were in service, and by then it was waaaaay too late. There were just not enough pilots and the Allied numerical superiority was just too great.

But back on topic- me, I kind of like all of the above; there aren't many WWII airplanes I don't like I lean way to the German side, but still appreciate the Spit, Mustang, Zero etc. The cool thing about the Luftwaffe fighters is they always had armament on the heavy side- at least one 2cm cannon, which beats the hell out of any MG, and later the super-powerful 3cm, which could literally destroyed opponents' airplanes with one hit. There's an incredibly telling photograph of an RAF post-war test of the 3cm MK108 cannon fired against a Spitfire fuselage in a static ground test; after being hit by one round, the Spit basically has a huge hole where the mid-aft fuselage was, and the tail is only held on by two thin bits of axial ribbing... nasty.
    Ohhhhh- pillage then burn...

Well i think i have to go with either the Hawker Typhoon, Junkers ju88,Messerschmitt 109, Hispano Buchon HA-1112, Messerschmitt 210-and 110

But if i really had to choose i think i would go for an air worthey Jukers Ju88.
