Default B-17 Flying Fortress crash from 1944 located in Arizona

    Hi Gang-
New to the forum here; just stumbled upon it and am very amazed to everyone's finds and the resources available.
This B-17G was stationed at Kingman Army Airfield in Arizona when it departed in the early evening of September 17th for a night navigational flight. As it approached Flagstaff, witnesses reported the engines were running at an excessive speed and that the aircraft's airspeed was below normal. The plane began a 360 degree climbing turn around the San Francisco Peaks when two fires were seen on the aircraft. Approximately one minute later, a third fire was seen in the rear of the aircraft. Soon after, the flaming aircraft lost power and began a descent until it impacted into the side of a peak, spreading wreckage down the steep canyon and killing all on board.

Most of the fuselage burned, what aluminum was left was salvaged right after the crash.

Great photos cav, hallowed ground indeed. Incredible how much of the aircraft has survived 67 winters up in those mountains.

Very sad. There were a great many aircraft accidents during the war years
    which were not combat related.

Third photo down on left, are the remains of a 'T-30' throat microphone
and in the fifth photo, on top of the rock, is what looks like the
perforated cooling sleeve for a Browning .50 machine gun.

It would be interesting to sift through all the bits of wreckage !
    Regards,

    Steve.

You are right- it is a throat mike and a .50 cal cooling sleeve, next to the .50 cal ammo chute. The bail-out alarm bell was in surprisingly good shape and still has the wires connected. Lots of interesting artifacts up there.
