Day 2 Detector Finds.

Well I did the second day but only got in 1/2 hour before the heavens opened!!!
Finds:
1 Metropolitan Police Brass Button
Metal Ring - Has numbers on but not able to photo as very poor
1 Penny - 1914
Another Cartridge Blank, this time dated 1941
Brass Belt Buckle (Buckle?)
Brass Gutter Bracket

Im starting to suspect 1 of the 2 options below:

1, 40's/50's Landfill site for ex WW2 items
OR
2, Unknown Police base / training area! (No village history records this!)

Being a mile from the airbase you could well be on the site of the airfield wartime dump. Have a look at old ordnance survey maps of the area you're digging in, see if the landscape has changed alot since the war. Any old clay pits or small depressions that suddenly become flat after the war could indicate they have been filled with airbase junk !

A couple of other thoughts for you that you may want to consider. Was the area used for a country fair or market or maybe circus at some point ? Was it used by the local Home Guard as a practice area ?

Any of these could just as well result in stuff like the above being dropped and then dug up by you 65 years later

Thanks Steve, I have just ordered a set of images from the period to have a look at

The Ring numbers look like they were: 145-1-?? but to be honest mate, thats a guess at best! Lost in the rust i feel

I will keep you updated on the maps
