Default FW190 Relic from Pierre Closterman victory of 27th Aug 1943.

This is one of two items I bought at our local War in the Vale (of Evesham) show last weekend from a Kent based dealer who attends the show. This item is a good sized chunk of either mainwheel or tailwheel tyre from Focke Wolf FW190 Werke Number 789 of JG26. The pilot was Unteroffizier H.Krieg and he was shot down by French RAF Ace Pierre Closterman of 341 Sqn Biggin Hill. I believe the mission was to escort B.17 bombers to bomb a V-2 facility and Closterman was flying a cannon armed Spitfire. The action took place near or over the Pas de Calais area of France and it was reported that there were 200 Luftwaffe fighters and just 24 RAF fighters involved in the air battle. Pierre Closterman recorded the events in his memoirs and recalled the shooting down of this FW190. It was not pleasant as the 190 pilot kept looking over his shoulder through his cockpit as Closterman moved in to fire both aircraft were diving towards the ground at speed in excess of 420mph-Closterman fired and observed flashes in the forward engine and cockpit of the Fw190. It hit the ground in a sliding fashion showering sparks everywhere before running into the bank of a road where it more or less disintergrated. This framed and glazed piece was found during an archaeological dig on the site where the diggers noted an extensive debri trail but no large pieces of wreckage and everything just in small bits. Does anyone have any information on the Luftwaffe pilot such as any photo or his full name etc? I know its a long shot but you never know. Regards Tim.Attachment 855808

Forgot to note-note how the piece of tyre is stamped "Made in Germany" this was due to the fact that Germany manufactured these same aircraft tyres for export to non German speaking countries so I was told.

FJ you have to be careful when you buy bits of aircraft off people particulary when it involves well known pilots, items like this could come off a number of German fighter or light aircraft I.E. ME108 ,bucker ect.I have in my shed loads of bits like this that I help to dig up,but nothing I could say who shot it down with certainty.do you know how many German aircraft crashed in that area hundreds.

Its deffo correct and I have some photos of the dig and recovery of many of the pieces of this aircraft as it came down along the edges of a road and went into a bank on a corner. The German pilot had been identified and the RAF pilot who shot it down was Closterman-not a very well liked man so I have heard for various reasons but interesting all the same.

Clostermann was not very well liked ?
By who ? British airmen or french airmen ?
He's a hero here and an example of what France did best.

It was a FW 190 A, for the pilot, nothing.

In cases like this there is a saying we all know, and we must remember to tell ourselfs:

""Buy the item, not the story""
