Dave.
They were here to KMNZ laying mines in Bass Strait only 100km from my home in GeorgeTown Tasmania.
Truly tremendous thread but it has to be said a graphic representation of the truly horrid nature of war!
Where are the poor man's feat? That is indeed a peculiar position he's in again like many have said it really gives the war 70 years later a new look.
Somebody (earlier in this thread) mentioned that his feet were probably amputated by the rudder pedals of the aircraft, on impact... Regarding his position, or pose - He was found in the Hurricane's cockpit, so his body has retained the seated position it had been in for all those decades...
Amazing pictures, you can see the tension of his last seconds in his pose.
Thank you for sharing these awesome pictures and story. We all need to be reminded war is hell, and young men die. Regarding the bodies condition. It has been found that bodies immersed in a bog are very well preserved, secondary to an extremely low amount of oxygen in the water. There was a famous case in anthropology of a man found in Denmark from thousands of years ago, whose hair was still present, wrinkles were visible on his skin, and the post mortem was able to identify the contents of his last meal......... And I agree, you can see the desperation in his position.....
wow thats all i can say is wow,,at lease the family of the dead pilot can have closer,,
Tollund Man. Believed to be app 2400 yrs old. One of several 'bog men' from Denmark (or persons really, as the bogs didnt discriminate). One of the best preserved - if not the best preserved - bog 'persons' in the world.
So incredibly preserved, that build, finger prints, beard stubble and his last meal could be studied, as Flying Fortress mentions.
Much has been written about his incredible peaceful expression and one would have to be made of stone not to be moved by seeing the Tollund Man or the Russian Hurricane pilot.
stunned at how well the body has been preserved fascinating pictures thanks for sharing and thanks to you he has now had the burial he deserves.
