Nevada Desert Finds

Hello mates, friends and fellow enthusiasts. Long time lurker, first post. We have explored all over the Nevada desert and with particular interest in emigrant trails. Below are several surface finds over the last decade on the deadly '40 mile desert.'

The Black Rock Desert was used for airel gunnery practice circa 1942. 1000 upon 1000s of ozidized .50 BMG brass all over the place. They rise and sink depending on moisture content of playa surface.



Located under an old outhouse. cylinder fused in open position. looks like .38 cal Colt



Found this under a very remote abandoned mining cabin in central Nevada. barrel bent, breech partially open. hexagonal barrel.



Hiking along a drained lake found this-- a Cobray M/11-09. Police say it was not reported lost or stolen, so its mine. Bolt 1/2 open and after some chipping away of corrosion, the 32 rnd magazine slips right out.

Thanks for the replies. Here in the 'wild west' we have many old ghost towns, abandoned mining camps and nearly every mountain range has historic ruins of one sort or another. To this day people are finding interesting relics from times past. A local found a broken officers sabre from the Battle of Pyramid Lake (1860) which he donated to a museum. The emigrants coming across the great basin in wagon trains often discarded property to lighten the loads, having packed too much when leaving the civilized east. (many would hide the property planning to later return but for many reasons never did). Those items and caches of property are still being discovered, however, its usually just a pile of fused, rusted metal. We do find lots of wagon wheel hubs and metal bands that encircled the wheels. All the wooden parts are long ago rotted away.


John C. Fremont was a famous US explorer and later politician, however, in a blinding snow storm he famously lost a mountain howitzer near present day Walker, California in the high sierra mountain range. For over a century it was lost to history until just recently. Many a history buff spent countless hours searching for its location, yours truly included. In 1844 John Fremont was in a blinding snow storm near present-day Walker, California in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. He lost a certain mountain howitzer and many over the last century have long searched for that historic relic. Seems it was recently located. Read more here:

Amazing finds! I just moved to Utah, so maybe I should go looking around for abandoned mining cabins...
