Good eye, petehi, you are spot on. I can see the taper under the tail. I think it's Nevada or Calif. There are some great crash sites out there. I always go on hiking adventures when I burn through my alottment of money too fast in the Las Vegas casinos. I have a book that shows all the crashes though, and this crash isn't listed as being in California or Nevada. Still looks like Nevada Desert to me. Take care, Jay

I'll throw my hat in the ring. Looks to me like Death Valley below there, so my guess is the Nevada / California line. You know there are dozens of military plane crashes within four hours of Las Vegas. Been to a few. Technically the US government owns every single piece of that plane, and they warn people they are stealing government property if they take one bolt. That's the US government for ya! They're gonna keep their claws on that plane, even if its in pieces on a deserted mountain side. Gotto love it. Take care, Jay
no quite true i believe any aircraft wreck pre 1957 (i think) the us AIRFORCE (not navy) has abondoned parts can therefore be recoved with the permision of the land owner only providing that human remains or machine guns arent found i understand the goverment want nothing to do with it, however if anyone has any ideas about aircraft recovery in the u.s i would advise double checking what i have read is right!!!

by the looks of the wreck i would say its deffinatly not a skyraider

I think you are right about the Air Force giving up rights to their later crashed planes, but I've heard that the Navy and Army never give up any rights (I also have not had this info verified). One of the problems in Nevada is that the Government owns something like 70% of the land through the Bureau of Land Management, so most of those crashes are already on government owned land which makes things extra sticky. i can imagine, i to heard about the army and navy not giving them up without a fight, this is part of the problem with the recovery of the over 200 aircraft in the great lakes such as f4f's, f6f's, avengers, f4u's and many other types

I think people would be amazed at how many crashed planes are laying out there here in the U.S. I saw on an air crash archeology website, there is a B-17 on a large hill in California I believe. People have scavaged alot of the plane, but there is still alot of stuff laying there in the pictures. All the human remains have been removed from the planes on the website. Jay

you're telling me! so the story goes they would 'trade' some of the recovered planes to the company that did all the work. this is how the confederate airforce (or whatever it's called now) got started.

there are some very rare planes down there and in fantastic condition too!

I really like the pictures there Andy, thanks. I want to get my 9 year old boy out to Nevada this fall, so we can hike up to some of those crash sites.

That's fantastic Andy, great quality time. We may have a couple of little relic hunters in the making. At least until they find out about girls at 16 or 17 years old. Then relic hunting will be on the shelf till they are 40 or 50 years old. Here in the States, I don't have the opportunity to see any Lancasters or German planes, Boooooo! I wish UXO would at least give us the state where this thing is sitting.

    Take care, Jay
