Small world sometimes, huh?
yeah that it is. Wish he was still around so I could ask him some questions. the 39 was an interesting plane, sort of an early Warthog built around a cannon. It would have been a pretty hot number if our air force hadn't taken the supercharger off. The Russians used them at low/mid level and they held their own up to the end. The follow on, the P 63 Kingcobra, did well after the war in air races going against Mustangs etc
"Dont give me a P39, Cos I value this life of mine
It will spin, it will roll, it will dig a deep hole,
So dont give me a P39"
Apparently this was a song sung by British aircrew issued with the early variant, as it was difficult to recover from a spin. Great to see the recovery pics, will be nice to see her restored too.

i was actually at the bell aerospace center today for a school field trip dor the aviation class and they had that particular p-39 there. it was fantastic. it was in extremely good shape and the people there are planning on restoring it at one point. also, i have some pictures of it on my phone, if someone could tell me how to get them on here i would be more than glad to.
i saw that plane at the bell aerospace museum
Brilliant thread! Great photos and the follow up info is first class, thanks for posting it!
Dear Fellows,
I would like to see more pictures about the recovery. Have anyone a wartime photo about Lt Baranovsky?
Would anyone be so kind to share more and more...
Lot of thanks.

The time I "cross the line" to Buffalo I' certainly going to the Bell Museum.
An old family friend (a Finn/Canadian) worked at Bell as a machinist making parts for the U-2 wing.
