The P-51 Mustang wasn't armed with 20mm cannon ; it used .50 cal machine guns.

cap is def. WWII but the same cap style was used on many planes, incl. P-38, P-51, P-47, P-39 etc. The 20 mm as stated was not used on the P-51. The P-39 did mount a 20 mm firing through the propeller hub.

Thanks Martin I do have a couple of rounds of 50 caliber machine gun rounds among my collection. The 20 mm must be part of the Spitfire relics I have. I am trying to piece together all the aircraft relics I have, there are Spitfire, Halifax, Stirling, Lancaster, and P-51 items. I believe all the US items are linked to the P-51 because of the piece of fuselage I have Serial No. –T---L?CLAD 2?43?-T back Serial No. 106-31178 ASSEM (A ? A) I was told all items starting with the number 106 were P-51s. Is it possible to link a particular P-51 with just the manufacturers serial?

I believe the P-51 relics I have are from a late mark Mustang, as the speed dial relic (0-700 mph) I have is from a late model, the 20 mm is dated 1944, as I said to Martin in a previous post the 20 mm shell is probably from a Spitfire. As the relics all came from German crash sites, the Spitfire especially didn't arrive over German skies until late 1944.

Thanks for the reply, the only reason I think its from a P-51 is it kind of ties in with all the other US items I have the speed dial 0-700, fuel cap, a couple of 50 cal ammo rounds, and most of all the piece of wreckage with the serial number –T---L?CLAD 2?43?-T back Serial No. 106-31178 ASSEM (A ? A) as someone told me all P-51 items were stamped with the 106 at the start of the number.

Here is some more evidence (I hope) that all the American relics among my collection are from a P-51 (based solely on the P-51 fuselage relic post 1 item 51), item 68 appears to be an American lap belt release, and item 69 the mounting end of the same belt, in photo below item 72 looks like part of a US parachute assembly.
