Ramsbury airfield find- not a bomb...!?!

Hi,
There was a metal detecting rally on part of Ramsbury Airfield (American 9th AF- 101st Airborne) and two of these turned up.
At first glance it looks like a nose cone to a bomb, but it was clearly NAILED, with brass pins, to something. The ferrule at the nose is stainless steel and attaches the whatever those workings are on the inside. There is also a broken lug or handle of some sort on the outside- wouldn't have done much for it's aerodynamics.
Zippo for scale (modern, but it was dug up!).

Anyone know what it is... even seen one before?

Its the nose section from a American Night Drift Signal AN MK4 ,These look like a bomb but have a wooden body . These signals are employed as follows: To determine the drift of the plane from which the signal was dropped. To mark the initial point of contact with a submarine. To mark an object to which an aircraft desires to call attention of a surface vessel. To determine the wind direction before landing. To mark the landing deck on aircraft carrier for night landings. To mark the location of the surface of the water for emergency night landings.
