Default round plaque with black R on yellow background

Today I found on a wall of an abandoned house not far from a former US base, a rounded metal tag/plaque with a hanger, a bit larger than a CD size. It was painted yellow and a black R in the middle. Although I am pretty sure I have seen it somwhere, I am not sure if it is military or not. For sure, it's not from here. Any guess? If it's military I am still in time to go back and take it

I grabbed it few days ago! I found it near a trail in the outskirts of town. The area was used by US and british troops until 1954. It is indeed not an italian sign so I am guessing. The support is quite heavy and well rusted, like it was attached to a bumper.

You could be right on the money there - this is on a jeep so it could have been part of a code relating to allowable loads or something like that !
The other is a NOS one before being painted with the letter / numbers

I don't believe it is a classification plate, as it is too thick and heavy.
There is no 'R' for vehicles classification that I'm aware of.

    * Great photo Dan - the passenger looks like he's thinking:
"How come he gets to drive..........?"

Ok now it gets interesting: look at this auction:

Armbinde Regulierer Version bis ca. 1978 | eBay

I uploaded also the picture for reference. It looks like exactly the same sign, only on an armband. But I found it in northern Italy, not Germany. Anyone knows what is for? In the area I found alot of WW2 german spent cases and other stuff as well.

The armband is for a "regulierer" from DDR, which if I understand correctly is traffic police? Maybe they used the same sign in WW2?
