Here is an interesting little set that came in just abit ago. Freshly excavated from the battle-stained soil of Northern Russia. A nice and Complete little field chess set made of white and black glass found intact and still together in a 70+ year old buried German bunker. Not worth a fortune, but it's these small Personal items that always draw my attention these days. Sadly, the boards for these were made of a cheap thin cardboard and This set's playing board long ago went on to join it's owner in the soil of Russia.

Astounding that the set was even complete back then William!
I can imagine bullet cases supplementing many a missing chess piece in bunkers all over Russia.

    Nice pieces of history

When i find ancient relics with my metal detector i can swear there is some kind of magic when i am the first one removing the piece from the ground after countless years in the soil.

True...it's interesting to speculate on the last game played with this tiny little pocket set and if the owner won or lost! He was an SS trooper in Russia, so I'm going to assume that he ultimately lost, in any case! Little could he ever have imagined that his little silly chess set that may have whiled away a few quiet hours with his unit buddies would ultimately end up on a shelf over in the States 70 years or more after he joined with the Russian soil. I wonder if he was any good at chess?

You should talk to Weitze or Klaus Butschek in Germany. Tell them you are looking for photos of a intact set- (or an intact set to display with your ground dug)
