    Except for the label the used wood, nails and hinges do not strike me as being from the 40's. Even if this one looks nothing like the red cross donated chess games (card board), it would be a private purchase sent to a soldier, but I don't think it was made in the period it says on the label.

    I don't see anything that says it is not period. I see a few small field repairs and wear.
    Typical construction of inexpensive wood item from the 30s and 40s.
    I think it is good.

    Cheaply made box-almost looks home made on the inside. The hinges have been tinkered with and possibly replaced. I can see no problem with this little chess set as being something sent from home to a soldier in the field. Are all of the pieces there?
