My first thought was Italian...but that egalitarian certainly has a Germanic head

My thought would be an individual torpedo boats crest

    I think Italian too.

That's was my immediate thought, I thought it may be german just due to the eagles head resembling the type you'd find on a decal, the more I look at it, the more of an Italian vine I get

    Correctomondo!

It's the emblem of USN PT Boat squadron 42, a short lived outfit from after the war's end.

    MTB RON 42
    Commissioned: 17,September 1945 - LCDR James A. Danver USNR
    Decommissioned: 8,February 1946
PT Boats: Elco 80' PT 613-622
    Assigned To: Pacific Fleet
Postscript: The squadron was the only squadron commissioned after the end of the war, and was never shipped to the Pacific. PT 623 and 624 were originally assigned to this squadron, but the construction was halted and were never completed.

Here's a repro patch for the outfit showing the same insignia as above.

    Regards, Ned.
