Neither version of the 2000 km enamelled plaques seem to have pre-drilled mounting holes as found on the plain 1000 km and 3000 km alloy plaques so would suggest they were not made for the same purpose. A period Deschler & Sohn catalogue would be really helpful.
While I do not have a period Deschler catalogue I have come across the red and blue enameled plaques at this years Max Show. Both were offered with their wonderful (blank) fitted leather cases. It would suggest they were non portable awards rather than a bolt-on accessories for bridges, street lamps etc. At least in my humble opinion. Prohibitive high price tag was the reason why they do not currently reside with me but it is my strong belief that they are of pre 1945 origin. Wonderfully executed pieces that are most definitely on my wish list for future purchase.

4thskorpian: That is a very nice piece. All I can add, which isn't much, is that the Autobahn construction project began during the Weimar Republic and was taken over by the NSDAP in 1933. The first ceremonial shovel of the NSDAP program took place on 23 September 1933. The NSDAP program called for 1000 Kilometers of highway to be built each year, January-December, but initial construction got off to a slow start. At the end of 1935, only 108 Kilometers had been completed and opened. 1936 was the first year that the year-end total distance reached and exceeded 1000 Kilometers, actually 1087 Kilometers were fininished and opened by 31 December 1936. So it appears that your plaque is pretty significant, and I imagine that similar or identical plaques were put up an entrances to the Autobahn to commerate the event in early 1937. As a matter of interest, the total at the end of 1937 was 2010 Kilometers and 1938 was 3046 Kilometers. Those three years, 1936, 37, and 38, were the only three years during which the annual 1000 Kilometer goal was reached. Dwight
