What where these eagles used for?
What where these eagles used for?
You need to show the back and give the dimensions of the eagle. Is it Bronze? Cast Iron? What?
Since it shows signs off corrotion i bet its cast iron, i will post pictures of back tomorrow, not at home right now. Its about 8 inches high 20 cm if i remember correctly, but ill give you the exact specs tomorrow.
New picturese
Still nobody that knows what this was used for?
I have tried to google it but cant find any looking like this one.
I have seen them described both as door knockers and desk ornaments.
They have certainly been copied over the years.
Cheers, Ade.
There are copies out there I have seen them but they are resign and dont have the hinges on the back like mine has, this one im confident is an original.
Still beleve they where attached on buildings or transportation, the back makes no sence as a decorative desk item or door knocker.
Here is one obvious fake
WWII German NSDAP eagle 8inch wingspan black resin For Sale
Found this one online, its just like mine and described as:
An early NSDAP party eagle in cast iron. This eagle is heavy for it's size, a bit rusty and weathered but otherwise fine. Possibly used as a paperweight or podium emblem.
There is often a stand found with these which yours is missing to enable it to be stood upright on a desk.
See this thread for another:
