For me, the best portrayal of the character is still the one by the actor Fritz Muliar (example: Die Abenteuer des braven Soldaten Schwejk - Intro Folge 7 - YouTube ) who just nailed the character perfectly.

(He even looked somewhat like the classical Švejk illustrations by Josef Lada.)

When I was younger I used to have similar figures.
They also had a small hole in their mouth like this one.
You could buy small sticks, put one of them in the mouth of the puppet and light it.
It produced lots of smoke and it looked like the puppet was smoking a cigar/ cigarette.
