It's likely that both these Sterling badges are WWII era. The reason the CIB
is in two parts was to be able to upgrade it from an 'Expert Infantry Badge'
to the coveted 'Combat Infantry Badge' ( by the addition of the wreath ).
This was most probably a cost saving feature at the same time,
as one would only have to buy the wreath instead of a
whole new badge..........
Um I know I'm late but I just saw this thread. Believe or not, we still use that type of bayonet in the modern army. There is a replacement bayonet that came out in the late 80s, but not all units have them. We have a whole foot locker in the arms room here in Korea of the old M4 bayonet.
