Close ups needed Joe, but it's very hard tell if it's deac or not. I the army we used portable x-ray equipment.
Botton, fuse, ect. Looks almost WW1 to me. If it's live contact EOD. Looks pretty suspicious.
Rule #1. Everything is live! Explosive get unstable over time.
If he dug it up in his yard, that would not fill me with the biggest confidence. I would have it checked out by the police.

Looking for militaria from HKB 31./977, HKB 32./977, HKB 38./977 or militaria related to Norway
Best leave it alone and call EOD
Hi Joe, call the EOD folks. They will come out and Xray it for you or take it to be Xray'd. I don't know if you have a Guard base near you or if you have to call the local PD. PD may be the best. Tell them that if it's deact you would like to keep it. Most likely they will let you keep it as they get tons of this stuff. No way to tell if its live or not right now.
Good luck
Burt

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I just called him and told him what to do.
The scary thing is, he wanted to donate it to my classroom!
Yes, and as some EOD guys told the public who inquired if they could stay and watch, when EOD diposed of a handgrenade on the spot where it was found locally:
"Well, if you can see the grenade, it can see you!"
Words to live by (literally!) and a helpful hint, when dealing with explosives.
I know the picture is rubbish, but could someone venture to guess what kind of shell it is?
Something around the 75mm range at a guess.
Cheers, Ade.
