Hello-this may be a silly question but why on Earth would a fireman have a bayonet? - I know the Germans loved dress ups but that makes no sense unless they were the 'Fahrenheit 451' book burning type.

When we call it a bayonet, it is really a bit of a misnomer: it is not actually slotted to fit a rifle.

They just liked to look more military I guess...They also had a dress axe.

    Cheers, Ade.

Could they also be a status symbol? My knifes bigger and prettier than yours.

Exactly, ade. The name says it all; Dress bayonet. It would have been worn during parades and special functions, hence why most examples are in good condition.

Similiar to US Marines of today....NCO's are issued calvary swords , and while functional at one time in our history, now are only worn when in their dress uniform.
