I found this cleaning out a relatives attic. I don't know much about it other than the german markings: Siegfried Waffen E Pak Sohne Solingen. Just thought I'd share.

Firemans dress bayonet.
Cheers, Ade.
Hello-this may be a silly question but why on Earth would a fireman have a bayonet? - I know the Germans loved dress ups but that makes no sense unless they were the 'Fahrenheit 451' book burning type.
When we call it a bayonet, it is really a bit of a misnomer: it is not actually slotted to fit a rifle.
They just liked to look more military I guess...They also had a dress axe.
Cheers, Ade.
Could they also be a status symbol? My knifes bigger and prettier than yours.
Exactly, ade. The name says it all; Dress bayonet. It would have been worn during parades and special functions, hence why most examples are in good condition.
Similiar to US Marines of today....NCO's are issued calvary swords , and while functional at one time in our history, now are only worn when in their dress uniform.

God and the USMC typos are fun!
Sorry, so used to spellcheck.... Plus I didn't realize I was participating in a spelling bee!
*cavalry
