The skies were full of aircraft in those days and 'friendly bomb' incidents weren't unusual. It could happen to the best of them - for instance Bill Reid VC, whose 617 Squadron Lancaster was brought down over Rilly-la-Montagne on 31/7/44 when a bomb dropped by another aircraft 6,000ft above went clean through his fuselage.
