Yes getting the chance to spend time with them and listening to their stories changed my perception of oral history. I found out more information from them than I could have gotten from reading 100 books. I got the chance to go to an aviation museum with the pilot and we crawled around a B-17G. He explained every detail about the duties of the pilot and co-pilot. Then I was able to take the waist gunner on an honor flight trip as his guardian. We spent a few nights in the hotel bar discussing his time in POW camp Stalag Luft IV. I didn't intend to write the book but the stories were just so great I couldn't avoid it.

After we were done at the air force museum I felt like I could have jumped in the pilots seat and performed a "run up" like a pro haha!

here is a photo of Al and I. He was the waist gunner on "Never Satisfied." He also served in Korea at Yong Dong Po and in Vietnam as an ordinance specialist in Thailand for the B-52s
