I picked up this bugle the other day. Although it is nothing new to the forum, I thought that I would show it because it has nice patina and will be nice for display with other Japanese militaria. I have been researching the type and have learned much from previous discussions on this forum, including the insight of Nick Komiya. Although I don't have the specific model type, it looks to be a pre-1930 version (prior to the Type 90, which had three loops) but likely lingered in use for secondary troops, military schools, ect into the 30's (I've included pics from period magazines). My example has red (faded) tassels and cord, which indicates army use based on my understanding. No markings on the instrument that I can see, except for a poss "3" inside the bugle opening, but it is very faint. I can't quite figure out the purpose of the cloth attached to the top of the loops. I've noticed similar fabric at the same location on other bugles. If anyone has nay ideas, please let me know. Thanks for looking.
You posted in the Axis forum instead of the Japanese one, so I only saw it now.
Here are illustrations from the army's new bugle training manual issued in 4th June 1934. As you can see the old model was still very much in use at the time. However, because of the difference in sound it was not recommended to use both models within the same unit.
The cloth on top is normally where a woolen cloth wrapping should be to serve as grip.
