    Default .50 CAL. ammo

I have found a cartridge case, which I have identified as coming from Remington Arms. I dug it up at the back of the house up here in the Shetland Islands, not far from Sullom Voe which was an important base during WW2.
The case is marked RA 1941 .50 CAL Z . I have found this on google but the images of the ammo show long cases about 140mm total I think, whereas this one I found has a case length of only 35mm. Were short cases made or has this one been cut down for some reason before being lost or dumped?

The short casing is from a .50 cal spotter rifle attached the 106mm recoiless anti-tank weapon. Its use was to simulate the exact trajectory of the main gun so to minimize misses.
