Been pretty quiet of late and no outstanding hunts after the recent extensive rains which have bought on the "Growing Season" ~

But referring the hunt directly above ~ If you check the scores you will see 6 brass discs ~ ( 4 mm * 25 mm dia)

I pulled them out and discovered much to my pleasure that 4 of them have logos and or markings~

So I delved further and as the logo was that of the 'Lithgow' star ~ So I sent the Lithgow museum an email and ' blow me down' I had an answer over night~

    Hi Stuart,

These are the butt disks from a SMLE MkIII rifle. They stopped putting butt disks on the SMLEs when they went to MkIII*.

    Kind regards,
    Kerry Guerin
Secretary, Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum

The discs are "Lee Enfield Stock Unit discs"

I have one which is stamped ~ logos aside ~

( Monetary wise they are sold out of UK for GBP 15 EACH!!)
    Cool find ! )

The discs were standard until the early 1920s-not used om later rifles- markings were branded straight on the wood or dropped altogether.

Weather has bought all proceedings to a halt here ~

But this appeared in Yesterday's Cairns Post ~ and the Brisbane Courier Mail ~

A Bloody Disgrace ~ in ANY country's dialogue ~ this individual needs to be hung out to dry ~

Not acceptable behaviour ~ You wear the uniform of 'your ' country ~ you ARE the ambassador and guardian of the flag !!

The story was even picked up in the UK !

A friend and fellow Detectorists ( also Site member) ~ made an inquiry to the Military Officer's Army training~ Museum in Canberra regarding My Instructional Corp Rising Sun.

    One more endorsement

    G'day Paul,

    A nice find

The Australian Instructional Corps is one of those lesser known army functions that provided training to the CMF (I think it officially ceased to exist in the mid-'50s).

I have an enamelled variant of the 'collar dog' at home which was worn by officers (which was an additional way of denoting rank and was common for other corps badges during the period as well) and a couple of bronzed 'collar dogs' distinguishing other ranks.

Whilst not as common as the standard General Service badge found in specialist stores (antiques/collectables/coin stores), they do come up for sale on occasion and is a nice addition to any worthy Rising Sun collection.

    Regards

    Steve

The brass latch although damaged to very heavy and brass ~ a Ripper ~

The copper lid is heavily engraved with zinc or chrome plating ~ maybe a tobacco tin or even a small jewellery box ~

Mate I am a little perplexed ~ if these discs were dropped around 1920 ~ or when the Lee Enfield MkIV * was introduced ~ why were these discs found in a WWII camp site of 1942-1945 ?

I also returned to the dam site where the Unit discs were in an attempt to see if there was any more ~ but alas the site is under water after recent falls ~ rising from 31% in late December to 46% in recent weeks ~

Australia never used the No.4 rifle in anything but very small numbers-the Lithgow factory only produced the No.1 until 1945-stored stocks of rifles from the Great war and immediately after provided most of the armed forces rifles until well into WW2 as production was slow to build up as the factory and its satellite sub branches in the region were also making other types of weapons as well. There were also large numbers of previously sold off rifles of various ages impressed back into service use, mostly for training or the VDC home guard.

PS This is my 1916 made ROF Enfield made LE No. 1 Mk III*-sent to Oz after WW1 to replace rifles sent to Britain in 1914. This was refurbished in 1947 and again stored away for WW3...note it still has the stock disc which is blank.

Been doing a bit of cleaning up of some of my fifty Cal. BMG rounds and cases after my off sider was going to dispose of a small bag of shells and cases .

In the lot was some three fifty cals. and an unusual .45 acp round ~

First stage into the 'snake oil' ( which is primarily designed for cleaning up silver coins but I found it works very well on brass as well~ )

Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

I am currently using my orbital sander mounted in the vice with moderate grade wet and dry ~ and finish off with a 1500 grade W&D. by hand and polish !

I know many like to retain the original patina ~ I do have an intact and 'live' round soaking in oil ( for 12 months now1) which I am undecided about ~

Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

Obviously finish varies from those recovered from the soil, those fired and non-fired ~ to those which have never 'hit the dirt' ~

Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

Then when I was cleaning up some of the projectiles I have accumulated ~ I took the grunge off a particularly grotty one to find ~ Opps it has a zinc/ nickle coating ~

Long story short it is a Vickers tracer round !!!!!!

Australian WWII - Far North Queensland Metal detecting and recovery

In the end I have a fifty BMG case which has had the projectile ripped out as rougly a Bush dentist would pulla swaggies's molar!

The Vickers fit all but perfectly and looks the part even if it is a 'lie'!

Then the last round which was donated my a mate turned out to be a nice surprise ~ 1937 FA

But still a few more to go ~ mot including the 'modern' post War era types ~

Some unmolested ~ some partially cleaned and ~ One original Aust Digger's WWII souvenir acquisition ~

Nice display. Have you considered giving them a clear coat so they don't tarnish?

yes ~ I have ~ I may polish them till the novelty wears off (LOL) ~ and decide which or how many to lacquer ~

I will put together a static display when I have done all those I have planned on cleaning up ~ including all the dates and head stamp details ~
