Were these road signs only blue in colour, as i thought that the colour blue was only introduced as a european common market standard for international driving, i believe they are also blue in other common market countries

I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this particular sign, but I used to work in the sign making department for my city, during the summer, while I was going to college. I would say the rust patterns on this sign are very typical or normal. When we put the finish on the sign, it never failed that we would break that finish putting the bolts in and cause rust around the bolt holes, and around the edges. It should be fairly simple to contact someone in the sign division of that governmental authority and ask them if the sign is original to the WWII era.

I think the important bit here is what the potential purchaser of the sign is expecting.

Authenticating it as WW2 era will be difficult if not impossible. Due to the nature of the 'relic' it has to be accepted that it may well be a fake. However, as a piece that tells a story, fake or not, it is a real beauty in that sense. Malmedy has it's own story and will strike particular resonance with our American friends.

So, what I am saying is, take it for what it is. A road sign that may be from the right era that has a towns name on it that lives in the history books.

Looking at it like that, and as long as the price is no more than 50ish Euros, I may be tempted to buy it myself !

Anyway, good luck and let us know what you decided

    Cheers

I've just checked it out on e-bay. It's already at $152 with 12 bids and 5 days left !!

This thing is going to sell for some serious money !

The pictures on e-bay show more detail and it certainly looks old enough to be from the right era.

Good luck if you decide to go for it !

I agree with you Steve, you need to keep an open mind when buying relics. Like I said earlier, Malmedy is in Liege, Province. If you are going to spend two or three hundred US for this sign, you should probably do some research. The Liege Province Government Phone number is 32 (0) 4 223 1404. Find the sign division, cut and paste a picture of the sign and ask some questions. The worst they can do is hang up on you. Good luck!

Just for everyone's information, the bidding has ended on this sign
and the final price was $1,302.22 US ! Unbelievable..........

I think the Officials in European towns with any relation to WWII battles
had better keep careful watch on all their signage ! !

    ................Gotta go !
( The enamel has dried on the 30 signs I just finished ! )

    Regards, Steve.
