Yes paul, all items are from the forrest around Sinimae/The Three Hills - these items and several more.

We went beyond the the usual tourist places as research was done before the trip.

Amongst other things we went deep into the forrest and also researched and followed what we believed to be the path of Tiger tank ace Otto Carius' tank push into the forrest.

Different stuff from this path and other places around then hills

Here a periscope cover, though not from a Tiger and not from around the Otto Carius push, but from a russian tank found else where in the Sinimae area. several other tank parts were also found. I assume this periscope cover is from one of the assaults on the hills, as the place were it was found was between the russian lines in a wooded area and on the edge of what is now a cultivated field on the expanse between the russian lines and the hills. This might have been defeated by one of the PAKs situated on the hills as described by some of the SS volounteers in the books (estonian and others)

Plenty of other stuff too from some russian trenches in the woods. Some one left a PPSH behind. Maybe a jam as mag was fully loaded.....

Quite an experience to walk there. It must have been hell on earth with steel raining down.

Yes some nice finds , a lot of Tanks were destroyed in these areas in the Auwere , just making sure you hadn't dug on the Hills themselves !!

Hi Guys,

Just a thought.... The I.D was originally stamped from left to right on the two holed side of the tag. It was then turned left to right through 180 degrees and stamped in an identical manner on the one holed side...Correct?

The damage to the tag, whether bullet or shrapnel, precludes the full reading of identity of the owner if it was snapped off in the normal manner. Therefore, after some careful thought, someone realised that the complete I.D could be retained if the tag was cut diagonally, thus ensuring the fallen soldiers identity. QED.

Therefore i suggest the tag was divided as such, in situ, on the battlefield.

since i just got tag and after close examination to edge of cut
i too now am sure it was done as you say
edge has same patina as rest of tag
