Do you know anything more about the history of these men? I think that it is important to tell as much of their individual stories as possible
For example,
Were they recovered where they had fallen or had they been given field burials?
If they were given field burials, which side probably did it?
(did the remains look quickly buried but with some respect, or were they just buried)
What was their unit?, or their approximate unit?
On what date (approximently) were they killed?
Can you tell by your other examinations of the site what could have happened to the men?
(killed by artillery, killed while defending, or killed while attacking?)
Can Sovet war dead ever be identified?
Your thread is littered with your great finds! Good job
Sadly it is often difficult to identify the remains of fallen Soviet solders. Many did not get issued with the early war black plastic tube which was used to house the paper on which was written the details of name date of birth, etc. Sometimes the men might improvise one from an old spent cartridge case and seal it was wax. However this was not common. The real problem was one of superstition: many believed if you filled in the paper slip you were then a dead man. So a great many never carried any form of "dog tag". ID was just taken at the time from the ID book. Now 65 plus years on some remains can be id'ed if the soldier was decorated. Most awards were serial numbered and these archives survive and can be used to make a positive id.
Here is a Red Army id tube from my collection.
Cheers, Ade.
Absolutely stunning finds. It appeared that he had SS marked flare cartridges in the lot. I learn something everyday. I knew the SS marked alot of their stuff, but I've never seen an SS marked flare cartridge. Ade, that's a wonderful ID tube you have there too.
