    Very nice find Seb,

It's the arming vane cap from an RAF No.44 bomb nose pistol:

    Help this frog,please!!!!

The cap spins off the pistol when dropped, exposing a diaphragm which fires the detonator on impact or when struck by the pressure wave of a previously exploding bomb.

    All the bes,
    PB

Yup, along with the similar Pistol No.55 (4 vanes on the cap rather than 5 on the No.44) it's listed as for use with the following bombs:

General Purpose: 250lb Mk IV, 500lb Mk IV, 1000lb Mk I and Mk II, 1900lb and 4000lb.
    Medium Capacity: all types
    High Capacity: all types

    All the best,
    PB

What exactly is the function of this device? Interesting little thing

    Datrus

The purpose of the vane Is to ensure the bomb isn't armed before it is dropped from the aircraft. Bomb pistols (as they are called) come in lots of different shapes and sizes, depending on the ordnance being dropped. Some are fitted in the tail, some in the nose. Google 'we2 bomb pistol' and you will see what I mean.
